Overview

The University of Florida welcomes international students to join our diverse population of learners. UF seeks students from around the world who have the desire to succeed and can positively contribute to our academic community by demonstrating strong academic performance. International students are welcome to apply to our master’s degree and graduate certificate programs, as well as to take our non-degree classes.

International students should carefully review the minimum requirements section of the respective program of interest.


Test Requirements

TOEFL

The English Language Skill Requirement for Admissions

If your native language is not English, or if you graduated with a bachelor’s degree from a non-English speaking country, you will need to submit your TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or other Graduate Council approved English language skills test scores.

Non-English Speaking Countries

Non-English speaking countries are those which are not included in the graduate school’s list of English speaking countries.

Sending TOEFL Scores

  • All applicants must have ETS (Educational Testing Service) send their official TOEFL test scoresdirectly to the UF Office of Admissions at code 5812.
  • Only official, sealed scores, direct from ETS (Education Testing Service), are acceptable. Self-reported scores, unsealed copies of score reports, or photocopies of score reports cannot be accepted as official final documents.

GRE

If either your bachelor’s or graduate degree(s) were earned outside of the United States, please see the GRE requirements below. An exemption for the GRE may be granted if you have earned a previous graduate or professional degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution. If you have a graduate or professional degree from an international institution, you must take and submit GRE scores. There is no exception.

How the GRE affects your application

The overall GRE score is taken into account along with other factors such as undergraduate GPA, and grades from other graduate courses taken within this program.

Additional Information

If you are earning a graduate level degree in the U.S. but will not have it completed by the application deadline for the term you applied for, you are not exempt from the GRE.

Transcript/Mark Sheet and Diploma/Degree Certificate: International Applicants

If either your bachelor’s or graduate degree(s) were earned outside of the United States, please see the transcript and diploma requirement below.

Graduate applicants must submit an official, original document in the native language of each transcript/mark sheet and diploma/degree certificate from each university or college attended. If the native language for the documents is not English, certified, literal (exact) English translations are required. The English translation may come from your university or may be completed by a certified translator.

Your transcript/mark sheet and diploma/degree certificate with English translations if required should be assembled by you and sent to the address below in one package. If you would like your transcript/mark sheet and diploma/degree certificate returned to you, you must provide a return shipping label and return packaging in the package that you send. You must also include this checklist, filled out, in the package that you send containing your documents.

How can I apply to UF?

Are there admissions requirements specifically for students applying from abroad?

International students are welcome to apply to any of our master’s, certificate, or non-degree programs. International students should carefully review the minimum requirements section of the respective program of interest. Any additional application materials that are needed for international applications are included on the minimum requirement pages below:

Is there an application fee? Can it be waived for international students?

There is a non-refundable $30 application fee. It cannot be waived for international students.

Will I need a student visa?

If you are applying for a master’s degree, please ensure early in the program that you will be able to enter the United States to attend our on-campus seminar during a Spring semester and comprehensive exam in the final semester. Contact your U.S. embassy or consulate if you are uncertain about the visa requirements. How will I be able to check on the status of my application and receive my admissions decision?

You will receive a unique eight digit UFID number that will allow you to check the status of your application materials. This UFID number will be generated at the time you submit your application. Admission decisions are sent to applicants via email to the address provided during the application steps.

How will I know if my application has arrived?

You can use your temporary username and password to log into your application and verify if it was successfully submitted.

Financial

Does UF offer any scholarships for international students?

Unfortunately, no. UF does encourage students to research external scholarship opportunities.

Test Scores

How long are my TOEFL scores valid?

Can I send a photocopy of my diploma and transcripts?

We cannot accept photocopies, scans, or faxes of diplomas or transcripts. We must have your original diploma verifying that the degrees reported were earned. We keep the diploma locked and safe until after your application materials are processed and an application decision can be made. How do I know if I qualify as an international applicant?

If you have earned any degrees outside of the United States or you currently reside outside of the United States, you are considered an international applicant.
