What is Managed Care?

Managed care pharmacy is the practice of applying clinical and scientific evidence to support the appropriate use of medications to enhance patient and population health outcomes while optimizing the use of limited health care resources.

Join a Dual-Focused Program

The Managed Care Pharmacy track is a comprehensive graduate program that combines the study of managed health care delivery models with the delivery of evidence-based, cost-effective pharmaceutical interventions. This unique dual-focused program will teach students about the many facets of health insurance benefit design and take a deep dive into newer innovations like risk-sharing, value-based care, controlling health care costs, and quality assessment.

Get In-Depth Look at Managed Care

Students will have an opportunity to study in-depth forms of managed care, both private and government-funded, as well as new healthcare delivery models. These include integrated health networks, accountable care organizations, and the overall enhancement of patient and population health outcomes while optimizing healthcare resources.

Elevating Experience with Education

Ashley A. Sax, Pharm.D., M.S., MBA, BCPS

"As a pharmacist who has been in practice for over 20 years, my decision to further my education was key in revitalizing my passion for pharmacy.  The focus of my practice has evolved with opportunities I would have never dreamed were possible as a pharmacist.  During my studies, which included the M.S. Managed Care Track and eventual MBA, I have expanded my current role from health plan PBM management and negotiation to becoming a vital participant in the population health and analytics team at a major health system in Louisiana.  The collaboration and insight from the faculty at UF were the most rewarding parts of the program and has contributed to my career success."

Selected curriculum topics include:

  • Prescription drug benefit design
  • Formulary management
  • Prescription drug pricing and reimbursement
  • Outcomes-based contracting
