Description
This course covers fundamental components and practical considerations for managed prescription drug benefit programs across commercial, Medicaid, Medicare, and exchange books of business. Students explore the structure and function of the prescription benefits management within health plans, self-insured employer groups, and prescription benefit managers (PBMs). Students will learn how to develop and operate a pharmacy benefit program while contemplating the impact of policies and decisions on the multiple stakeholders, such as plan sponsors, network pharmacies, drug manufacturers, beneficiaries, regulatory agencies, etc. This course explores the business relationships between these stakeholders and how they often have competing priorities where policies that benefit one partner may adversely impact another. Students will consider trend reports of current prescription benefit management practices, medication utilization and spend, and specialty pharmacy management.
